Field Recording Sourcebook..

Rode NTG5 Broadcast shotgun microphone

[Ed note: I have started using the Rode NTG5 as my secondary, or Wide-field microphone. I am not particularly happy with this as it is a shotgun, not really wide field. But, it is widest field RF biased microphone I can reasonably get my hands on. The Sennheiser MKH 8020 omni or 8040 cardioid RF biased mics might be a better choice, but at $1400 each are out of my price range.]

The NTG5 is a short shotgun microphone designed for the most demanding recording applications. Tailored frequency response, tight polar pattern and smooth off-axis response deliver superb audio. Lightweight aluminium construction makes it perfect for location recording with a boom pole, and RF-bias circuitry and conformal coating ensure high resistance to adverse environmental conditions.

The NTG5's conformal coating is a thin layer of protective material that shields the active electronics from any moisture or particles, and the RF-biased circuitry is very resistant to moisture. This makes the NTG5 perfect for use in harsh weather conditions.

The revolutionary design is the result of many months of specialised acoustic testing that began during the development of the TF5 mic designed in collaboration with legendary engineer Tony Faulkner. The TF5's capsule features a unique perforated acoustic vent design and this breakthrough lead us to completely reimagine the NTG5's design, with acoustic perforations employed along the length of the microphone.
